I am a fine artist living and working in Belfast. Working mainly in oil and charcoal, I produce representational portraits and paintings that aim to voice the truth of the subject, not just capturing a physical likeness. The fluidity of oil paint enables me to capture fleeting gestures and movements. I know I’ve got to the truth of a subject when not only the likeness but personality has been captured: they simply speak or sing to me from the canvas. From there it is simply filling in the gaps of the painting.
After completing a foundation year at the University of Ulster, I moved to London to embark upon a degree in Fashion Promotion and Illustration at the University for the Creative Arts. I graduated in 2006 with a first-class honours degree and worked in London as a freelance illustrator and storyboard artist for clients such as RSA Films, i-D Magazine, the BFI, Screencult, the National Portrait Gallery, the Barbican and the Royal Academy of Arts.
I returned to my native Belfast in 2020 with my young family and now work solely as a fine artist, specialising mainly in portraiture. I enjoy combining classical and contemporary painting and drawing techniques. I follow a classical approach to a painting by initially completing a detailed charcoal drawing, followed by an underpainting. I then allow myself freedom with colour and use a variety of brushes, rags and my fingertips to create a contemporary piece.
In January 2015 I held my first solo exhibition, showcasing a collection of 365 daily drawings from my Sketch A Day Project 2014. The exhibition received great critical acclaim and was featured in publications such as Artists & Illustrators, Leisure Painter, Creative Review, The Belfast Telegraph and DIVA magazine. I have also been shortlisted for the Royal Academy of Arts Summer Exhibition.
